A real PSA:

Since I know a lot of us frequent this area I thought I'd post it here. Please feel free to repost any of this.  This message went out on the Harvard Employees mailing list this afternoon:

On Sunday, September 14, 2008, a female undergraduate Boston University student reported to the Harvard University Police Department that she was the victim of an unarmed robbery while walking down Garden Street at approximately 9:15 PM. The victim while traveling from Currier House to the Harvard Square MBTA station was struck from behind by an unknown individual.  The victim could not definitively state where the incident occurred. After being struck the victim fell to the ground. The victim did not witness who attacked her and did not hear anything, as she was listening to music. The suspect fled the area after taking the victim’s iPod, digital camera, cash, and a wallet. The victim was not seriously injured and declined medical attention.

And this went up to the same list on friday:

Unarmed Robbery
Cambridge Commons, Cambridge

This advisory is based on information received from the Cambridge Police Department on 9/11/08.

On Wednesday, September 10, 2008, a male student reported to the Cambridge Police Department that he was the victim of an unarmed robbery in the Cambridge Commons at approximately 9 PM. While traveling through the park, the victim was struck from behind by an unknown individual. The victim turned around in an attempt to defend himself and was struck several times by three additional unidentified males resulting in a bruised and swollen lip and two bumps on his forehead. The victim was knocked to the ground and the four suspects fled the area with the victim’s gym bag containing various personal items including a cell phone, iPod, and credit card.

The victim was unable to provide a detailed description of the suspects.

If the book has anything to do with dermatology, do not, do not, DO NOT look inside. Likewise, beware anything that includes "Illustrated Atlas of" in the title.

Tomorrow is my birthday.
You should celebrate this by coming out to VI and dancing until you can't.

2:18PM - Things I've Learned at The TSS Desk: #8

HBS doctoral students exist in a separate universe from most other people; one that doesn't make any sense.

Me: "Well, most people do have cell phones these days, so it's a  fairly safe assumption (that you have a cell phone)."

Them: "Yeah, well, most people are poor and killing each other too."

One more time:

I've joined team [:Angeldustrial:] for the AIDS walk. If you'd like to make a pledge to help raise money the address to do so is here:

The walk's on sunday. I'm not trying to be a pest, and thank you if you've already donated to mine or any one else's page. I just wanted to get this up once more for the last minute people.

rishikanta has gotten me into a Showtime series about Henry VIII, Tudors. Last night we watched up to the most recent episode. It's very soap-operatic so the history is pretty fast and loose.  Visually it has all these little details of sixteenth century Europe, some of which are definitely not correct, but the filming was done with the lighting and color pallet of the paintings from the same time. It feels more like you're watching an artist's imagining of the story rather than the real thing, which in fact you are. It makes the discrepancies easier to ignore and the drama easier to get caught in.
And but damn can these people write a monologue.
R also convinced me to watch an episode of Dexter. I was shying away from it at first because I'm usually not into the whole psychological/serial killer idea in plots. But three episodes later and I'm hooked into that one two.
That and a Milagro margarita, and it was definitely a fine way to put yesterday's work-day behind me.

Pandora keeps pulling a song up for me which I really like: The End Starts Today by BIS. I'm considering getting the album but I don't want to buy something I'll only enjoy one track on.  Does any body know where I can find some more of their tracks, or samples of them at least?

Since we are about a week out from this, I'll re-post:

I've joined team [:Angeldustrial:] for the AIDS walk. If you'd like to make a pledge to help raise money the address to do so is here:

I'll most likely put it up again sometime during next week. It's ok to constantly ask for financial contributions if it's not for yourself :)

A good way to get one's problem taken care of is to yell at the receptionist. The reason they put her out front, after all, is because she runs everything.

Oh. My god.  (click 'Zur Prasentation')

I think I just died.
In the Shakespearean sense.

Seriously, the list of their archives is a thing of beauty. I really wish my German didn't suck. In either case I get to be in this room.
I'll try not to make too much of a mess.

My commencement ceremony went well. It was long, there were 1,100 names to read off, but not bad ( I'll admit that I got through the list of 400+ business students by playing Tetris). Our speaker was Liz Walker. I rolled my eyes when I found that out, but she made a really nice address actually, and I couldn't argue with her delivery.  There was a family lunch after wards, which I survived. I was able to do some more celebrating later, as one of my graduation gifts was not having to drive to VI.
On to the next question I have heard a few dozen times since saturday: What's next?
I'm traveling in July on the summer study/travel session I was working on getting money for this spring. I sent the last payment off yesterday so on July 12th I'll be flying out with a group from the college. We're staying in Prague (Czech Republic), Bratislava (Slovakia[?]), Budapest (Hungary) and Vienna (Austria). There's numerous stops at points in between. I fly back to the US on July 23rd.
The travel plans are holding up the search for work, since I obviously can't get a job and then tell them I'll be taking off for two weeks almost immediately. The serious job hunt will begin when I return, though I'm putting out feelers now.  For now, I'm keeping the job at HBS.

I'll try to get one of the requisite goofy pictures of me in my graduation robe up in a couple of days.

I really need to stop walking to the Harvard bookstore on my breaks.

The damage:

Purchased: Istanbul, Orhan Pamuk. (If I can't go, I can at least read about it)
Ordered: Adventures in Unhistory, Avram Davidson (Finally!)

I'm re-reading through a series right now, so I'll most likely be taking these to Central Europe with me.
I told myself I wasn't making any more ' unnecessary' purchases this week, but there are worse things I could be squandering my meagre funds on.
The squandering will happen during the weekend, when I'm buying drinks at X-Mortis.

As I stated in an earlier post, I'm graduating in a little under two weeks. I'll be graduating as a "Commonwealth Honors Scholar". This means my ridiculously easy  Freshman first semester fooled them into thinking I was really smart and they signed me up for this program, which I had to spend the next 4.5 years busting my ass to maintain a place in. It got me some money for school and looks good on a resume. It turns out that another 'perk' of the program is that I get to wear a gold stole at graduation, the better for everyone to point and say "Look at the over-achieving smart-asses!" by. The stole arrived in the mail the other day.

Here's me in the stole...Collapse )

When I heard we were getting these, I didn't know anything about the embroidery:

I. Am a walking VNV Nation song...Collapse )

Me: "TSS. Good afternoon."
Them: *silence then confused muttering*
Me: "Hello? May I help you?"
Them:  *ear piercing tones as they begin punching buttons*
Me: "I'm sorry, I think you may have the wrong extension."
Them: "Hello?"
Me: "Hello."
Them: "I'm looking for my voicemail...?"
Me: "I'm sorry, sir. This is the TSS help desk. I think you have the wrong extension."
Them: "Is this ******?"
Me: "Yes it is."
Them: "But that's my voicemail."
Me: "I'm sorry for the confusion, sir. This is the TSS help desk number."
Them: *confers with some one on the other end* "My assistant says this is my voicemail extemsion. What do I do now?"
Me: "Maybe if you hang up and try the number again...?"
Them: "No, no: to get the messages, what do I do now?"
Me: *at a loss*
Them: "....Oh. Never mind, I dialed the wrong extension. You said this is ******?"
Me: "Yes, sir."
Them: "It's not, just so you know. Thank you." *hangs up*

Two points to sum up how I'm doing:

1) Ovebooking? What's that? (Today is for a friend who is absolutely worth it. I will pay for it tomorrow.[Overbooked is better than anxiously cramming {I officially have too many parentheses}])

2) Zahwi Hawass is my hero sometimes. Someday I hope to be in charge of a collection that I am half as passionate about.
